The Stirling Ridge Walk - National Heritage Listed Stirling Range National Park

A challenging adventure for fit, well preparred and experienced mountaineers

This is the only hike in Western Australia with alpine weather conditions.

The walk involves many narrow ledges, very steep ascents and very steep descents, and much scrambling over jagged rocks and through sharp and thick bush. It is a tougher, and more exhilarating, walk than any other in Western Australia.

Violent weather changes including very strong gusty wind, whiteout, hail, sleet or snow can occur with little notice, and at most times of the year.

Navigation can be a challenge. The trail is unmarked, and even in good visibility is easy to lose. A compass course may be necessary. The book Mountain Walks in the Stirling Range, Part 2 by A.T.Morphet describes the Stirling Ridge Walk in great detail and is worth studying carefully. It is available at Stirling Range Retreat. (Smart walkers organise a plastic coated map so that they can use it in sleet).

Depending upon navigation skills and fitness the walk can involve a two-night bivouac, which may necessitate camping in the cold and wet. Walkers must be appropriately equipped. (The clothing, tent and sleeping bag bought for the beach in the summer probably aren't appropriate for this walk).

There is no permanent water on the ridge and hikers must carry enough water for the entire walk, or have well thought escape plans in the event of expected water not being present. Depending upon food, the typical water requirement for drinking and eating is five or six litres per person per day.

Hikers must register with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) Ranger. Phone 9827 9278, or complete the registration book at the junction of Bluff Knoll Road and Chester Pass Road.

Stirling Range Retreat offers a shuttle to and from the mountains for Stirling Ridge walkers. Advance booking and prepayment is essential. The cost per group one way to Ellen Peak is $60 for up to 4 persons (with $20 per extra person). The cost to Bluff Knoll is $20 for up to 4 persons (with $7 per extra person) per trip.
