The Stirling Range Retreat is surrounded by attractions, both natural and manmade. Here we list a few of our personal favourites.

1: Stirling Range Retreat

2: Bluff Knoll Cafe
Under new management since April 2008. An easy walk across the road from Stirling Range Retreat. Takeaways, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea available Wed to Mon, dinner available Thu to Sun, closed Tue.

3: Amelup Roadhouse
This facility, located 9 kilometres north of the Retreat on Chester Pass Road is open daily, providing deli lines and fuel to travellers.

4: The Lily Dutch Windmill
The Lily Windmill is a replica 16th century Dutch Windmill on Chester Pass Road, 11km north of the Retreat.

7: Walkers' Registration

8: Mt James Track
Linking Chester Pass and Bluff Knoll Roads this track forms a 22 kilometre return walk. The trail is along a firebreak and commences on Bluff Knoll Road 5.5 km from the junction of Bluff Knoll and Chester Pass Roads.

9: Toll Peak picnic area
This picnic area provides fine views of Toll Peak. The walking track is closed as a dieback control measure.

10: Toolbrunup Peak
Altitude: 1052m    Length of track: 4kms return    Hiking time: 4 hours

A favourite. The trail up the mountain is a wilderness track with loose rock and scree encountered for the last 1/5 of the hike towards the summit... (more)

11: Moingup Springs

12: Mt Hassel
Altitude: 847m    Length of track: 2kms return    Hiking time: 2.5 hours

Last burnt (by lightning strike) in January 1996. This popular hike finishes with a short steep scramble over a dome of rock, forming the summit. This is an "easier" hike, with many wildflowers during spring... (more)

14: Scenic Lookout
A scenic lookout over the Hostellers Hills. Photographers have reported awesome sunrises and sunsets here, weather permitting.

15: Mt Magog
Altitude: 856m    Length of track: 7kms return    Hiking time: 6 hours

A lovely picnic area set in white gum/heath country can be found off a 1.2km one way loop drive at the foot of Mt Magog. More adventurous visitors may wish to try the four hour hike up through the valley to the summit... (more)

17: Baby Barnett Hill scenic lookout

18: Red Gum Springs
This water source for pioneers is now dry, however a toilet and a picnic area are located here.

A shorter favourite. The steep trail with some scree begins at the carpark with a tourist boardwalk and continues steeply up the plateau at the summit... (more)

21: Bluff Knoll
Bluff Knoll wreathed in clouds Altitude: 1094.97m    Length of track: 6kms return    Hiking time: 4 hours

Bluff Knoll, listed as one of Australia's 25 best hikes, dominates the view from Stirling Range Retreat. It is the highest peak in the Stirling Range and indeed the whole southwest of the state. With 360° views at the summit it offers ocean glimpses on a clear day... (more)

22: Stirling Ridge Walk
The only alpine walking in Western Australia. It involves narrow ledges and very steep ascents and descents and much scrambling over jagged rocks and through sharp bush. Violent weather changes including very strong gusty winds, whiteout, sleet or snow can occur with little notice... (more)

Ellen Peak from Bluff Knoll

23: Ellen Peak
Altitude: 1012m    Length of track: 22kms return    Hiking time: 10-12 hours

Ellen Peak is the eastern end of the Stirling Ridge Walk. Apart from the first 5kms of firebreak, the track is informal and unmarked and easy to lose. A compass traverse may be necessary. Very strong gusty winds and/or white out conditions sometimes occur at short notice... (more)

24: Abbey Track
Located 9.96 kms from Formby South Rd and linking Salt River Road with Stirling Range Drive, Abbey track is approximately 10 kms long. Walkers park a second car at the end of the track, and on completion return to pick up their first vehicle.
