The Stirling Ridge Walk

The Stirling Ridge Walk. Ellen Peak from Bluff Knoll Rated one of Australia's most challenging wilderness hikes the Stirling Ridge Walk covers the 15.5 km between Bluff Knoll and Ellen Peak. Recommended for experienced, well prepared, fit and agile hikers due to it's rugged nature, changeable weather conditions and lack of water sources, it is the only hike in Western Australia featuring alpine weather conditions.

Hikers can start the walk from either end, but should contact the National Park Ranger (phone 9827 9230) and register in the log books at the Bluff Knoll picnic area before doing so. Stirling Range Retreat offers a shuttle service to Bluff Knoll or Ellen Peak for hikers. Booking is essential (phone 9827 9229). Once the walk is completed hikers should be sure to sign out of the log books.

Camping in a cave on the Stirling Ridge Walk As the walk route is not clearly marked a good map and navigation skills are essential. Recommended attire includes long trousers, a long sleeved shirt, weather proof jacket, boots or sturdy shoes with non slip soles, sunscreen and a hat. Hikers should be prepared for any weather conditions, even the possibility of strong gusty winds, white out, even sleet or snow in winter.

Under good conditions the walk can be accomplished in one (very long) day, but it is usually covered over two or three days. Hikers can camp in the open, or bivouac in one of the caves. All hikers should ensure that they carry enough water as opportunities to refill along the walk are absolutely unreliable. There is a water barrel on the Three Arrows, roughly halfway along the route, but this must not be relied on.

Clouds cascading over the Stirling Ridge Walk The Stirling Ridge Walk is one of Western Australia's most magnificent and challenging hikes, completing it will leave you with memories to last a lifetime!
